Overview:
[Back cover] In this compelling narrative, André Luiz emphasizes the work of high order spirits in the effort to convert the spirit Gregorio to the Good, an effort that culminates with the unforgettable reencounter with his mother – herself a highly evolved spirit – wherein he surrenders to the irresistible call of Love. The book also contains information on how unhappy spirits act as they try to involve incarnates in their wiles. The spirit author tells of the intercession of high order spirits on behalf of human beings, demonstrating the divine compassion that grants to all the blessed opportunity to free themselves by means of study, labor and persevering service in the practice of the Good.

André Luiz was a physician and researcher who lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the beginning of the XX century. After his discarnation, he spent over eight years in the lower zones, being finally rescued by Clarêncio, an assistant from “Nosso Lar”, one of the spiritual colonies neighboring Earth. After a period of learning and intense work at Nosso Lar, André Luiz gradually overcame pride and selfishness, and eventually acquired citinzenship at Nosso Lar. His solid scientific knowledge and great powers of observation have allowed him to recount his experiences as a discarnate being, first in the lower zones and subsequently at Nosso Lar. His experiences and struggles to better himself come down to us through the psychography of Francisco Xavier and are beautifully narrated in the books that comprise the André Luiz Collection or “Life in the Spiritual World.” Faithful to the solid foundation of the codification by Allan Kardec, his novels are an amazing non-fictional, first-hand account of the author’s educational and transforming experiences in the spiritual realm. They all bring to life the teachings of the Spiritist philosophy, the revealing observations of Spiritist science, and the unequivocal operation and justice of the natural laws. Whether spiritist or not, we should all strive to learn from the pages of his life so we may be better prepared to face our own.

The Secret of the Poor Souls in Purgatory

An interview with Maria Simma of Austria

 simma
Maria Simma (1915-2004)

Today, very little is taught in regular catechism classes about Purgatory, about the suffering that the Poor Souls experience in order to be completely purified to be able to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet Purgatory does exist, and the sufferings that the Poor Souls experience there are very real.

Since 1940 (she was then aged 25), a privileged soul, named Maria Simma, has had regular visits from the souls in Purgatory to explain their sufferings and to ask for prayers and Masses to be released from Purgatory. Her local Bishop and parish priest told her she could make known these visitations as long as there were no theological errors.

SPIRITISM IS OUR LORD JESUS HOLY SPIRITS REVELATION

WHAT IS MY PURPOSE IF I DON’T KNOW IT?

This conversation about the existence of a purpose for a human life was initiated by a reader who proposed these intriguing questions. Not surprisingly, most of his questions are not strange to anyone of us. And at some level they are reflections of our puzzlement with the phenomenon of life. The answers, of course, are not easy, nor will ever be complete satisfactory, but the Spiritist wisdom supply some very sensible considerations. The following response is a contribution from Elza D’Agosto.

The Reader: I am currently reading the Spirits Book and have a question. According to the Spiritist Doctrine, spirits incarnate in order to accomplish a specific mission. Is there a way to uncover what this particular mission or purpose is? It seems that living this incarnation without having accomplished our purpose is a wasted incarnation. Why is this purpose not clear to us? Why is it being kept obscured from us?

I remember a time in my life I felt there was no use in living this life without knowing its purpose. So much so that after much suffering decided I would end it all. At the very moment that I was going to end it all something took over me and I am still here today. Perhaps it was divine intervention from the spirit world trying to stop me, knowing what was in store for those who chose to end their life before the appointed time.

Yet here I am today, many years later, still without my purpose. Why is it not like other missions where you are handed a mission plan with the specific targets and objectives? Why do we not have guidance?

Hello Dear Reader:
Interesting questions you pose. As you know one of our doctrine’s maxims is ‘unshakeable faith is that which can face reason at every situation in human life’. So let’s put it to the test!

We can use reason and be rational as we ponder on your questions. First, a correction you’re not here without a purpose, the fact that you have not become aware of your purpose doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Nothing in God’s universe is purposeless. Indeed, it was divine intervention that stopped you from making a grave mistake and ending your probabilities to achieve your purposes, as well as the certainty of adding something wrong which could only make things worse.

We do have guidance all the time but we don’t usually pay attention to it. We’re like children who don’t listen to their parents or teachers, then later find out that the answers were there all along. You see, your teacher and guide ‘took over you’ at the right moment. This happens sometimes, they take over when we aren’t listening.

Why aren’t we handed a mission plan? Why isn’t this purpose clear to us? Because God gave us free will, which means that we can change our mission plans and purposes after we start them. We actually choose our mission plans and purposes before we’re born and we do this with the help of mentors. The plans are more directed toward what we need to learn rather then how we need to do it. And is simply because evolution, or progress, or advancement is the law, how we do it is our choice. Let’s say someone’s plan is to become a doctor for whatever evolutionary reason. This person has an entire lifetime to accomplish it, some go straight through the educational process, others drop out and return later, others do what Albert Schweitzer did. If the person was supposed to be a doctor why wouldn’t it be made clear to them? The answer is that the person got distracted by other interests, is a bit rebellious, stubborn, a maverick, the opportunities were presented and the person was ‘out to lunch’. A reincarnation (lifetime) cannot be wasted because the plan isn’t about ‘one’ lesson or one achievement. We always learn something, even if it’s what we shouldn’t do.

Why is it being kept obscure from us? One of the reasons is that if we find out beforehand we start reacting to this knowledge rather than acting to accomplish it. Furthermore, everything would be revealed to us, good and bad, bad news would stop us on our tracks. Besides, at what point should we receive this knowledge? When we’re young and stupid or old and tired? It’s more efficient (in the sense of progress) to be directed toward a goal and be empowered by our own decisions.

The first chapter of Genesis makes a good point about revelations. It says: in bringing integral truth to men wouldn’t revelations have the effect of stopping them from developing their faculties and doing their own investigations? Which is to say that it’s not a good idea to hand human beings everything they need. We’re are problem solvers by nature, we don’t learn or grow when we’re given what we want. We don’t even appreciate things that we don’t earn. Children who don’t have to work for anything always fare worse than those who have to earn them. That’s human nature, we need to have the opportunity for our indomitable spirit to rise.

This leaves you where? Without a tangible answer, you’d say. Therefore, the definitive answer is: we, all human beings, need to evaluate all our difficulties in great detail and patience. All our difficulties comprise the problems that we need to solve in this life, that’s part of the mission. If we get to solve most of them and not add any, our incarnation is a great success. And, we need to pay attention to where life leads us, if something sounds positive, not harmful to anyone, doable, helpful, then we should do it, regardless of how wild it may sound. If it doesn’t work we consider it lessons learned and skill acquired and move on to the next idea. In other words, we can’t stop and not go any direction, we ‘go any direction’ and then see what happens.

And lastly but also important, we pray, usually just before going to sleep, asking for our guides to show us what we need to know. Then, all of a sudden, we have a significant dream or get this out-of-left-field intuition.

Hope this helps and makes sense to you. This doctrine tells us that God put us in the right place, in contact with the right people, in order to do what we need to do. If we trust Him to know better than us we would just act.

Peace

Get to Know Allan Kardec

In a transcendental sense, Allan Kardec was an advanced consciousness, a spirit who had a direct intuition and experience of God. His life, as repeatedly narrated in the Spiritist media, was the realization on Earth of such innate awareness. For him, God and Christ were not merely objects of belief, but living facts. However, like Pascal, the great mathematician, philosopher, and mystic, Allan Kardec trained his intuitive power on the examination of the fundamental realities of life through rational inquiry.
Born Catholic but raised as a Protestant, Kardec studied both religions with an enthusiastic zeal and with a dream of unifying them to glorify the spirit of Christ. The rifts were, however, deeper and wider than he could imagine. However, in the tangible evidences of a spiritual realm, he found the point of union to advance a new vision and purpose for the human spirit.

Allan Kardec

Allan Kardec deduced a code of moral and ethical behavior through methodical analysis of every aspect of the phenomena, as only a man of his training could. Kardec is credited with establishing the points of interaction between the natural laws and the invisible world, which he believed to be the final destination of all residents of the physical realm.

Allan Kardec had a vision, however, that in some aspects went beyond the points above. He had a reason, a strong one indeed, to see the value of Christian Spiritism from a wider angle. The French social and religious environment of his time was firmly molded by Catholic institutions. On the other hand, neighboring countries, especially Switzerland and Germany, had become the fertile bed for the Protestant movement. Faith had only two colors, and they were not inclusive at all. In matters of religious choice, the grays and pastel colors were prohibited. Allan Kardec saw the futility of forcing allegiances in matters of religious choice. As he confessed in Posthumous Work, he had realized the full significance of Jesus’ saying “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:34).

Allan Kardec’s life task was an essential element of a greater plan to accelerate the spiritual transformation of humankind. Painfully aware of the theological divisions among the many Christian denominations, Allan Kardec, following the orientation of illuminated intelligences, made the gospel of Jesus, and only the gospel of Jesus, the moral centerpiece of the Spiritist Doctrine. By attaching only a secondary role to the Old Testament and the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament, the Spiritist Doctrine was safely protected from the theological wars that have harmed Christianity for centuries.

Allan Kardec’s spiritual mission on earth was to lift the veil that separates the present and the future of humankind. Allan Kardec, with wisdom and compassion, turned the Spiritist Doctrine into a Christian lighthouse of hope and consolation. Allan Kardec felt the presence of the Divine Spirit, and wholly dedicated himself to attracting humanity to God and Christ.

Life and Thoughts

Hippolyte-Leon Denizard Rivail, who would later bear the name of Allan Kardec, was born on October 3, 1804, in Lyon, France. It was assumed that the young Rivail would follow the path of his many ancestors, who had distinguished themselves as lawyers and magistrates. However, he was attracted from his youth to the sciences and philosophy.Denizard Rivail completed his early studies at Yverdun, Switzerland, where he became the disciple and collaborator of the celebrated Professor Pestalozzi. He then applied himself whole-heartedly to the propagation of the education system championed by Pestalozzi, which came to have a great influence on the French and German school systems. The disciple-turned-teacher had acquired all the requisite qualifications for such a task: he had a Bachelor of Arts degree in letters and science, and a doctorate in medicine. Furthermore, a remarkable linguist, he spoke German, English, Italian, and Spanish fluently and could easily express himself in Dutch.

lifethoughts_kardec
Allan Kardec

Rivail was a member of various scientific societies, most notably the Royal Academy of Arras, and his presentation of his noteworthy article, “Which System of Study Is Most Harmonious with the Needs of the Time?” won a best paper award in 1831.

Rivail first heard of rapping tables in 1854. He was introduced to the phenomenon by Mr. Fortier, a hypnotist with whom Rivail was acquainted through his studies of human magnetism.* One day, Fortier said to him, “Here is a thing that is quite extraordinary. Not only is a table made to tilt, but it can also be made to speak. Ask it a question, and it replies”.

“That”, Rivail replied, “is not magnetism, but another matter. I will believe it when I see it, and when it has been proved to me that a table has a brain to think and nerves to feel and that it can become an experimental subject. Until then, allow me to see nothing in this but a fable”. Such was Rivail’s position. He never denied a thing on preconceived opinions, but he always asked for proof, wanting to observe and analyze before taking a position.

Here is how Allan Kardec reveals his doubts and hesitations and his first initiation to the rapping tables:

I found myself, then, confronted with an unexplained fact that was, in appearance, contrary to the laws of nature and that my reason rejected. I had not yet seen or investigated anything; the experiments done in the presence of honorable and trustworthy people had at least confirmed for me the possibility of the purely material effect, but the idea of a talking table still did not enter my mind.In May 1855, I witnessed for the first time the phenomenon of rapping tables, which jumped and moved under conditions that precluded doubt.

These meetings provided me with my first opportunity for serious studies of the subject that later led to the Spiritist Doctrine-study filled less with revelation and more with systematic observation. As to any new subject, I applied rigorous method to the investigation: avoiding preconceived notions, I observed attentively, compared observations, and deduced the consequences. I tried to identify the causes of the phenomena by linking the facts logically, and I did not accept an explanation as valid unless it could resolve all the difficulties of the question. This was the way I had always, from the age of fifteen or sixteen, proceeded in my scientific investigations. I understood from the beginning the gravity of the exploration I was undertaking. I foresaw in those phenomena, the key to the solution of problems so obscure and so disputed, both in the past and in the future, which I had searched for all my life; the phenomena posed a complete revolution in ideas and beliefs. It was necessary, therefore, to act not lightly, but rather with circumspection, to be positive rather than idealistic, so as not to be carried away by illusions.

One of my first observations was that the spirits, being only the souls of men and women, did not have either absolute wisdom or absolute knowledge; their knowledge was limited to the level of their advancement and their remarks had only the value of a personal opinion. Recognizing this fact from the beginning saved me from the serious error of believing in the spirits’ infallibility, and prevented me from formulating premature theories based upon the opinion of only one or a few spirits.

The mere fact of communication with the spirits, no matter what they said, proved the existence of an invisible world. This, in itself, was a fantastic discovery, opening an immense field for exploration and providing a key to understanding a multitude of unexplained phenomena. No less important, it furnished the means to understand the state of that world and its customs, if we may thus call them. I observed early on that each spirit, with its own personal position and knowledge, unveiled to me an aspect of that world, just as one comes to know about a country by interrogating inhabitants of all classes and circumstances, each able to impart something and none able, individually, to impart everything. Any observer is obliged to form a picture of the whole by examining the material collected from different sources, which he must compile, coordinate, and compare. I, then, dealt with the spirits as I would have dealt with human subjects; from the lowest to the most elevated, they were, for me, simply a means of gathering information, not infallible experts.

* Translator’s Note: Allan Kardec was a serious investigator of a phenomenon that intrigued some of the great scientists of his time-the effect of the mind on physical healing. The field evolved into what is known today as hypnosis. The history of modern hypnosis begins in the eighteenth century with the arrival of Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815). Portuguese monk, Abbe Faria (1756-1819), learned to produce a somnambulist state simply by gazing steadily at the patient and then shouting “Sleep!” Dr. James Braid (1795-1869) coined the word ‘hypnotism’ after the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos, to describe the art and science of inducing hypnosis. Support for the teaching of the therapeutic use of hypnosis in medicine finally came in 1955 from the British Medical Association, and was closely followed in 1958 by the American Medical Association. It has received “bad press” of late, mainly due to the unscrupulous practices of some stage hypnotists, but its professional use in treating both physical and mental disorders continues to thrive.

The Reformer

Allan Kardec, the nom de plume of H. Leon Denizard Rivail, was a French educator and philosopher born in Lyon on October 3, 1804. Rivail spoke several languages, and his impressive intellectual background allowed him to teach courses in comparative physiology, astronomy, chemistry and physics in a prestigious scientific school in Paris. For one of his research papers, he was inducted into the Royal Academy of Arras. He organized and taught free courses for the underprivileged. In 1854, at the age of 50, Rivail heard of the mysterious paranormal phenomena that had taken America and Europe by storm. Despite his skepticism, he was convinced by close friends to attend an experimental meeting where he was able to witness such occurrences first-hand. His intellectual curiosity and scientific instincts told him that there had to be a rational explanation for these phenomena. Consequently, he began soon afterward to conduct investigations of his own.

Using the same logical rigor that he had applied to his work in education and science, Rivail set out to understand the phenomena. He submitted questions to different channels (mediums), in different countries. The answers were compared, analyzed, and organized for inclusion in The Spirits’ Book, which was first published in 1857.

To keep his new area of research apart from his writings on education, Rivail – on the advice of spirit instructors – adopted the name Allan Kardec, which he was told had been his name in a previous incarnation. In addition to the publication of the books listed below, he founded the Spiritist Society of Paris and La Revue Spirite, a journal he edited until his death on March 31, 1869.

Missionary Journeys

Allan Kardec was one of the most influential thinkers in modern history. The body of work that he produced changed the religious landscape of 19th Century Europe and reestablished the spirit, or the soul, as the center of human life. At a time when the ferment of positivism and ideas on natural evolution began to coalesce to destabilize traditional theology, Kardec broke ground with a new vision for the human spirit. To provide a focus for these notes, it is fitting to highlight, first Allan Kardec’s extraordinary intellect and second, his intense devotion to two causes: the sublime superiority of the Gospel of Jesus as an ethical code of behavior, and the primacy of reason and freedom of inquiry.

Allan Kardec was born to a family of lawyers in Catholic France and educated in traditionally protestant Switzerland. In spite of his upbringing, he was ill at ease with the religious establishment’s intransigence toward free-inquiry and scientific theories. At that time, England, France, and Germany were the greatest centers of scientific progress.

After almost 10 years of uninterrupted work he published his most important books: The Spirits’ Book in 1857, The Gospel Explained by the Spiritist Doctrine, in 1864, during this time he also published a monthly magazine called Revue Spirite. In a clear and scholarly manner, he advanced the concept of interacting with and learning from souls no longer in the physical body. Thus, his works expanded the horizons of human life and challenged the dogmas at the heart of Catholic and Protestant theologies. The books and periodicals that he made available to the public became the main forces behind the fast propagation of Spiritist ideas throughout Europe. The number of centers and study cells grew almost exponentially in France, Belgium, and the rest of Europe. Allan Kardec became a prominent figure and an authority on matters related to spiritual philosophy.

Because of continual communication with followers, mediums, and all others who felt comforted with the new ideas, he understood the importance of becoming a visible touchstone for the new vision. Hence, in 1862 he undertook a lengthy tour of France’s major centers of Spiritist activity. He traveled by train, boat, and horse carriage; he visited 22 cities in 2 1/2 months, in a very intense effort to inspire and guide the new movement.

map

On one hand, there was the character of the religious currents that colored people’s convictions, and on the other the acerbic materialism of the intellectual elites. Therefore, it is opportune that we revisit the genius of Allan Kardec’s approach. He lectured in every city and spent precious time with workers and local leaders. The methodology he used had four components that later became the central focus of the Spiritist vision.

Christian Love and Charity
Christian charity is the corner stone of the Spiritist vision. Earthly life is an invitation for the human soul to do good and learn to care about all living beings. In God’s designs, no expression of goodness is wasted. Every generous action produces fruits in time. It does not matter whether our actions are acknowledged by others; the pleasure of serving and giving is the reward of those who seek God. The sole purpose for the mentoring and caring work that enlightened spirits do is make human beings better, righteous, and loving. These devoted mentoring spirits inspire human beings on the path of self-knowledge, and sustain them in the struggle to overcome selfishness and pride. It is then understood why the long-standing dictum ‘without the Church there is no salvation’ changed into a universal hymn ‘Without Charity there is no salvation’.

Spiritual Gifts Are Not An End
Spiritism values and nurtures this exceptional dimension of human nature. These gifts are not privileges reserved for a selected few, they happen naturally and almost randomly in the population. As any other human endowment, they must be developed further into sublime levels, much as painting or music writing is developed into masterpieces. Anybody can be a medium, but only the person, who exercises this faculty selflessly, in the service of love and the wellbeing of others, meets the standard of mediums in Christian Spiritism. A spiritual gift shall not be a source of pride, or a means to enjoy financial benefits. The true miracle is not that which transcends human knowledge, but that which results from the care and unselfish service one extends to his or her neighbor.

Religions Are Strengthened by Spiritism
As a spiritual philosophy, the Spiritist Doctrine stands as a new bridge to integrate science and religion, and further encourage people toward a communion with God. Spiritism does not adopt the liturgy and practices of any religion, or their points of dogma. It respects all expressions of human faith in the Divine, and works to raise awareness to the realities of the spirit and future life. The essential mission of Spiritism is to encourage all beings to join under the banner of Christian charity and love.

Spiritual Evolution Instead of Salvation By Grace
Evolution is a law of nature and the evolution of the physical forms on Earth follows precise laws. The spirit, or soul, lives for a few decades in the physical body, and later it continues its journey onward. Progress and evolution are part of the divine design in all realms. Thus, by learning about the future life and its laws, human beings realize the importance of self-knowledge and inner-reformation. Contrary to theological traditions, the Spiritist philosophy sees grace not as a state that one receives, but a state that one attains through personal effort, work, faith, and service. Accordingly, the Spiritist Doctrine fulfills its purpose by helping to raise the moral consciousness and overall goodness in humanity.

Allan Kardec’s missionary journeys established Spiritism as a movement of social reform and spiritual transformation and became the public face for the movement. His keen intellect and breadth of scientific knowledge reinforced Spiritism’s character as an open and rational philosophy. He completed five long missionary tours between 1860 and 1867. The trips he took in 1862 proved the most comprehensive and of greatest impact to the Spiritist community. The chronicles of his journeys are published in the Revue Spirite

Almost all Catholic and Protestant Churches preach G-d total failure because many few persons would be saved in their teachings. And his heaven would be full of criminals as their wrong concepts.

SPIRITISM SHOWS THE TRUE THRONE OF OUR LORD G-D

SPIRITISM IS THE OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST HOLY SPIRITS REVELATION

Luke 9:28-31
The Transfiguration

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter,
John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.
29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed,
and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor,
talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about the death of Jesus,
at Jerusalem, which was about to come.
